Binding of 2,3-Diphosphoglycerate to Haemoglobin Valency Hybrids

Abstract

ARTIFICIAL intermediates of haemoglobin, notably the so-called valency hybrids (for example, αIII2βII2 and αII2βIII2) and their nitric oxide or cyanide derivatives, have recently attracted much attention, because properties of individual subunits such . as a- and β-chains can be studied within the tetrameric framework of the haemoglobin molecule1–3. Also, these hybrids have been looked at as possible models of the intermediates formed during the process of ligand binding which may give a clue to the understanding of allosteric transitions in haemoglobin4,8.
