Evidence for Non-exposed H-2 Antigens in Immunoresistant Murine Tumour

Abstract

IMMUNORESISTANT murine tumour cells, capable of transgressing histocompatibility (H-2) barriers, are frequently characterized by low expression of surface H-2 antigens1–3. It is not known, however, whether the decrease in surface H-2 antigens is due to masking of such antigens existing in normal quantities or to a loss of H-2 antigens with subsequent replacement by other antigens or non-antigenic substances. In our attempts to understand immunoresistance, we have chosen two ascites sublines from the spontaneous murine mammary adenocarcinoma TA3 of strain A (H-2a) origin. One of these lines, termed TA3/Ha, shows wide homotransplantability and more than ten-fold reduction in the amount of expressed surface H-2 antigens in relation to other lines, TA3/St, which is regularly rejected by allogeneic mice. The history and some details of these tumours have beea published elsewhere4–6.
