Effects of Antitumour Immunity on Pregnancy in the Mouse

Abstract

THE coexistence of individual tumour-associated antigens and cross-reacting embryonal antigens on the cell membrane of hepatomas and sarcomas induced by two different carcinogens has been demonstrated in vitro1,2. Destruction of embryo cells by antitumour immune sera or lymphocytes has never been reported. This is probably due to the lability of the embryonic antigens which disappear when embryo cells are growing in an adult environment3 or in vitro4, thereby preventing their use as proper target cells.
