Abstract
THE concept of stringent control has been almost exclusively applied to the amino-acid regulation of RNA synthesis1. It has been widely accepted that the genetic locus responsible for this control is the rel gene on the E. coli chromosome2. In a previous paper3, however, we have suggested that the function of rel gene is not to control directly RNA synthesis, but to facilitate the normal synthesis of protein when the supply of ammo-acids is limited, and that the loss of the stringent control in rel- cells is the consequence of the inhibition of normal protein synthesis in amino-acid starved conditions.
