Differential Morphology of the RD Virus from the Human Rhabdomyosarcoma, RD-114B Cell Line demonstrated by Negative Staining Electron Microscopy

Abstract

THE human rhabdomyosarcoma cell lines (RD) established by McAllister1 produced tumours in kittens2. The RD-114B cell line, started from one of these tumours, was karyotyped as human and was found to contain C-type particles3. Antigenic studies of the RD virus indicate that it is not related to any of the known feline or murine C-type particles3. With conventional negative staining electron microscopy4, we have found, by comparative morphological studies, that the RD virus has features that distinguish it from murine leukaemia viruses and from feline leukaemia and sarcoma viruses.
