Abstract
LYSOSOMAL enzymes are important mediators of the inflammatory process1. Soluble extracts of purified leucocyte lysosomes elicit cutaneous and joint inflammations2, and degrade the protein-mucopolysaccharide matrix of cartilage3. Activities of acid hydrolases are elevated significantly in inflamed tissues, including rheumatoid synovial membranes4–7. The hydrolytic degradation of cartilage protein-mucopolysaccharide, which underlies the inflammatory pannus of rheumatoid joints, may be provoked by lysosomal enzymes released from cells that are phagocytosing immune complexes within the pannus8,9.
