Abstract
THE RNA of phage Qβ consists of about 3,500 nucleotides1 and comprises three known cistrons coding for maturation protein (a structural component of the viral particle also designated as A or A2 protein), coat protein and the β subunit of the viral replicase2. When ribosomes are bound to intact Qβ RNA they attach predominantly to one binding site, namely that at the beginning of the coat cistron3. This binding site is located at about the 1,400th nucleotide from the 5′ end1.
