Abstract
THIS report deals with some of the statistical properties of quantal transmitter release at the Mauthner fibre-giant fibre synapse in the hatchetfish Gasteropelecus, and the way in which these properties are modified by presynaptic intracellular depolarization. The experiments reported indicate that Poisson statistics describe transmitter release in the hatchetfish at low, but not at high, release levels.
