Induction of Plant Growth Inhibitor Xanthoxin in Seedlings by Red Light

Abstract

ONE explanation of the retardation of growth1 when etiolated plants are exposed to light is that light induces the formation of a growth inhibitor2, and increased concentrations of inhibitors in plants after illumination have been reported3–6. In two of these reports3,4 the inhibitor had chromatographic properties similar to those of abscisic acid (ABA). From this and other evidence it was postulated that an ABA precursor might be formed in darkness and converted to ABA in the light7.
