Abstract
MOLECULES of tRNA are probably produced by a series of alterations of the original transcription product of tRNA cistrons. The nucleotide modifications occur on an unmodified precursor1–8, and there is also suggestive evidence that the common 3′ -CCAOH end may be added to a precursor, for this sequence seems to be absent from tRNA cistrons9 and there are enzymes which can bring about the addition8. Precursor molecules also are likely to have short lifetimes in vivo.
