Our dear colleague and friend Gianvincenzo Barba (‘Gianni’) unexpectedly passed away on 4 June 2014. Gianni was an active member of the IDEFICS consortium from the very beginning. He was one of the main investigators of the group from the Institute of Food Sciences, National Research Council (Avellino, Italy). He played a prominent part in the development of our research tools and in the IDEFICS community intervention. Gianni was especially interested in hypertension, and for this reason he was leading the paper on blood pressure in this volume. He was a great human being—friendly, warm and ever willing to help those who needed his wisdom. He did it with a gentle smile, energy and enthusiasm. We have lost a dear friend, a man of integrity, high principles and common sense.
