CRISPR base editing protects the heart

CRISPR-mediated gene editing is being developed to correct inherited genetic mutations, but broader applications of the technology have been limited. In a recent paper, Lebek et al. describe a CRISPR base editing approach that could potentially be applied to a wide selection of patients with heart disease. By suppressing a pathogenic, hyperactivated form of Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase IIδ (CaMKIIδ), the approach protects mice from heart failure after oxidative stress.
