How does Neonatology fit into Maternal and Child Health?

The L. Joseph Butterfield Memorial Lecture Workshop on Perinatal Pediatrics April 2005 Scottsdale, AZ, USA

When I was asked by Dr. Hartline to give this Butterfield Lecture, I was reluctant to tackle the job primarily because I have not had direct patient care responsibility for many years. I have had a position on the sidelines, maintaining a research laboratory and, until recently, meeting with residents and fellows once a week to discuss a patient in depth. This means I have become a critic without responsibility for what I criticize or the necessity or ability to offer solutions. I was not allowed to withdraw, so these are my skewed observations and a plea for those of you who care about what has happened to neonatology and to medicine in general to get involved in those societal areas that will promote the care and welfare of mothers, their babies and their families.
