CPT is a registered trade name of the American Medical Association. The following describes in general terms the Evaluation and Management and Procedural codes often applied in neonatology. Practice groups should review the definitions and their application and assignment. Detailed discussion is available through the coding trainers subcommittee of the Section and in publications such as the AMA's CPT 2001 manual and in the AAP's Coding for Pediatrics.
Under the Resource-Based Relative Value Scale, each code is assigned a value based on relative value units (RVUs). The total RVU for a given code is comprised of three subunits: one for physician work required, one for practice expense, and one for liability risk. Each of these three is then modified by a geographically specific factor (not the same for all three components) and the total is then multiplied by the conversion factor applicable to the state where you live. This conversion factor is published in the Federal Register. Current information on specific codes is found in the document published by the Section: “2002 RBRVS: What is it and how does it affect perinatal pediatrics?”
