In 1935, on learning of the need for new accommodation for the Sheffield Dental Hospital and School, he donated land and the sum of £7,800 for equipment. Sir Charles died in 1936 leaving the University £78,000 before the plans for the hospital were finalised. Delayed by the Second World War the foundation stone was finally laid on the 12th of September 1951 by the Minister of Health Hilary A Marquand MADSc. MP. Alumni and former staff toured the hospital, a balloon race raised funds for the Meningitis Trust and staff and guests attended a Service of Thanksgiving.
