Armond Lucas Gwynne

Armond Lucas Gwynne was born in Cardiff in 1940, qualified in dentistry at London in 1964 (BDS, FDSRCS) and in medicine (MBBS) also at London in 1970. He was former Principle Secretary of the Medical Defence Union. An outstanding student, he became the Army's first dental cadet, later serving as a Captain in the RADC in Tidworth and Hanover. On completing his army service in 1966 he returned to King's College, London, to study medicine. After qualifying in 1970 he worked for two years in general practice in Croydon. There he became interested in medico-legal matters and in 1972 joined the staff of the Medical Defence Union, where he rose to be its principal secretary. He was an oracle of sound advice.

His main interests were music and horticulture, and in 1979 he bought a small farm in the Vale of Aylesbury which he managed while still working for the MDU. In 1987 he took early retirement and together with his partner, Bill Harper, moved to the Welsh Matches, where they restored a farmhouse and created a garden in an area of great natural beauty. From there Armond continued to exercise his well recognized talents as an itinerant lecturer on medical defence issues and worked as a consultant to Bevan Ashford, a firm of Bristol solicitors, until shortly before his death from a carcinoma of the stomach on October 23rd 2000. He is survived by Bill Harper and a sister and is mourned by an intimate circle of friends.
