Scoring to the max

The Dental School of St Bartholomew's and the Royal London School of Medicine, Queen Mary and Westfield College, London was awarded the maximum score of 24 in an assessment of education quality made recently.

The Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) which acts for the Higher Education Funding Council for England, awarded the Dental School the maximum score of 4 for each of six aspects of provision. A school's QAA score is likely to have an important impact on the number and quality of applicants to the school. Applicants for undergraduate and postgraduate taught courses increasingly use league tables and objective measures of quality in choosing a school. This QAA review confirms the School's position as one of the top Dental Schools in the UK and also strengthens the reputation of the School of Medicine and Dentistry, Queen Mary & Westfield College and Barts and The London NHS Trust.

Can you help?

The body of an adult white female was found on the foreshore at Foulness Island, Essex at about 1500 hrs on Sunday 16th April 2000. There was no indication of the woman's identity and no ante-mortem dental records relating to the deceased were available for comparison purposes.

  • The upper left lateral incisor is chipped on its mesio-incisal corner. This damage may have occurred in life or after death. The damaged dentine and enamel is unstained.

  • The lower right canine tooth is hypoplastic with orange discolouration on its incisal third.

  • Oral hygiene is fair. All teeth anterior to the second and third molars are well cleaned. There was a moderate accumulation of calculus in the lingual gingival margin area of the lower front teeth.

  • There is a full dentition and all 32 teeth are erupted and in normal occlusion.

  • The dental restorations are amalgam fillings which have been carried out to a good standard. The extension of the restorations could be considered a little larger than is usual in the UK.

  • The deceased's dentition has a slightly irregular alignment of the lower front teeth and mesially inclined lower left posterior teeth.

  • It is thought the deceased was about 45 years of age.

  • The dental restorations may have been placed during the last three years.
