Marathon man

Left: Mark Moran, a dentist from Cardiff, will be raising money for The Children's Trust when he runs the London Marathon on Sunday 16th April.

Mark will attempt to run 26.5 miles and raise over £1000 for the children with disabilities charity. He expects to cover over 500 miles during his training and has his two Jack Russels tagging along for company!

Deborah Franklin

Dr Deborah Franklin has been appointed to the post of Consultant in Community Paediatric Dentistry within Avon Community Dental Service.

This post is a new initiative within the Community Dental Service reflecting the increasing demand for clinical leadership and specialist care for children with special needs.

New Council President

Robin Wild, Chief Dental Officer at the Department of Health, has been elected President of the Council of European Chief sDental Officers.

The Council provides a forum for the exchange of views on dental matters which affect European Union (EU) and European Economic Area (EEA) member countries and offers advice to the Commission and others on matters affecting European dentistry.

The Chief Dental Officers are the senior professional officials or civil servants who act as advisers on national European governments.

State of the art

The Dental Clinical Skills Laboratory at Newcastle University was recently opened by the President of the BDA, Dr J S Robson. This was as a result of the dental school's Millennium Appeal launched by the dean, Professor J J Murray.

This futuristic undergraduate and postgraduate teaching facility with its mini surgeries and closed circuit television replaces the more familiar named phantom head teaching room.

The development's working party, chaired by Professor Angus Walls, designed the laboratory in conjunction with the equipment manufacturers ADEC. They worked to provide the best teaching facilities as part of the continuous modernization of the school.

Hard graft pays off

A group of dentists were recently invited to an informal reception at the Guy's Kings and St Thomas' Dental Institute at Kings College Hospital. Martin Kelleher, postgraduate dental tutor at King's and Nigel Fisher, his counterpart at Guy's, hosted the gathering.

John Tiernan, Head of Practitioner Services at Dental Protection, presented certificates to three dentists in recognition of the number of hours they had devoted to postgraduate education at King's: Manbinder Kaeley, Tina Curwen and Milin Parekh.
