Tooth whiteners

Tooth whiteners have been taken off the market following a July 1 decision from the Court of Appeal. The judgement was concerned only with the legal classification of these products, not with their safety.

Although a 1984 amendment to the EU cosmetics directive put a ban on hydrogen peroxide in most cosmetic products, the law is now being relaxed. A 1993 amendment to the EU cosmetics derivative allowed 0.1% hydrogen peroxide in oral hygiene products and 3.6% hydrogen peroxide will shortly be allowed in whiteners used under dentist supervision.

We expect whiteners using hydrogen peroxide to be back on sale in the UK during 2000.
