Although acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) remains fatal for the majority of patients who present with this disease, over the past few years major advances have taken place in understanding the biology of the leukemic stem cell and applying some novel immunotherapeutic modulations to the therapy of these patients.

The outcome for older adults with AML is particularly dismal. While a greater proportion of such patients are offered induction therapy, and 40–50% enter remission, only about 5% are long-term survivors. Since this group represent the majority of patients with AML particular attention has been focused on the potential of non-myeloablative immunotherapeutic options in the treatment of such patients. Progress in supportive care measures are no less important. At the same time, advances in the understanding of the pathogenesis of the stem cell in leukemia has increased our basic knowledge regarding the etiology of this disorder.
