New Edition of the Human Genetic Mutant Cell Repository Catalog

The 1994/1995 edition of the National Institute of General Medical Sciences’ (NIGMS) Human Genetic Mutant Cell Repository catalog is now available. The Repository has human cell cultures and DNA samples available in the following categories: inherited metabolic disorders with characterized mutations, well-characterized chromosomally aberrant cell cultures, a CEPH Reference Families collection, a human diversity collection, and human/rodent somatic cell hybrid mapping panels. The 1994/1995 catalog includes 5,883 cell cultures and 458 DNA samples. In addition to the printed version, the NIGMS catalog is also available on-line. To access the on-line catalog via Internet, telnet to coriell.umdnj.edu. At the login prompt, type: online. Investigators are also encouraged to contact the Repository to submit specimens from individuals with well-documented genetic diseases or somatic cell hybrids retaining human chromosomes or derivative human chromosomes not currently in the collection. Inherited Disorders and Their Genes in Different European Populations

St. Feliu de Guixols, Spain

November 11–15, 1995

Conference organizer: Peter Harper, Coorganizers: Jaume Bertranpetit, Albert de la Chapelle, Angus Clarke.

Applications are invited to participate in this meeting, the second in a series of European research conferences on the topic. The aim of the conference is to allow clinical, molecular and population geneticists to share data and hypotheses, both with each other and with scientists from other disciplines, such as archaeology and anthropology.

The number of participants will be limited to around 100 people. Younger research workers with relevant data to present and discuss will be especially welcome; specific financial support may be available for them and also for participants from Eastern Europe.

In view of the wide interest in the subject and the success of the previous meeting in Strasbourg, it is likely that there will be considerably more applicants than can be accepted. Thus early application to the ESF Conference Office is advised; the latest date for applications is July 1,1995.

CEPH Genotype Database Version 7.1 Available on Anonymous FT F Server

The Centre d’Etude du Polymorphisme Humain (CEPH) maintains a database of genotypes for all genetic markers that have been tested in the reference families for linkage mapping of the human chromosomes [Genomics 1990;6:575–577]. All genotypes submitted to the CEPH database are now available by anonymous FTP server. V7.1 contains genotypes for some 6,000 genetic markers, including more than 2,500 microsatellite markers, assigned to all human chromosomes. V7.1 genotypes, pairwise lodscores between marker loci on the same chromosome and programs for managing the database, may be downloaded from the FTP server for use on a PC. The database may also be downloaded onto a UNIX system. In addition, the server contains databases for published CEPH consortium maps. The server may be accessed as follows: ftp ftp.cephb.fr. The directory is /pub/cephgenotype-db.
