Attendance 'could hit 3000'

8 April 1999

[LONDON] A strong response from countries keen to send full-size delegations to the World Conference on Science in Budapest in June means that some officials now predict that attendance at the conference could reach 3000 individuals, if not more.

Numbers have been limited by the fact that attendance is restricted to those who have been invited to attend by on of the two co-organisers, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) and the International Council for Science (ICSU).

Nevertheless initial predictions that there would be about 2000 official delegates (each national delegation invited by Unesco has been restricted to 10 members, and other delegations have been invited by ICSU) now seem likely to be considerably exceeded. One developing country, for example, is said to have requested to send an official delegation of 25 members.

The only major problem that this could cause, however, is during the opening plentary session, where space is expected to be strictly controlled. Local organizers say that there is plenty of room to accommodate the many parallel sessions that will take place during the rest of the conference.
