Rotavirus

Rotavirus is an infectious agent belonging to the virus family Reoviridae, which are important human and veterinary gastrointestinal pathogens. These viruses, particularly rotavirus A, are a leading cause of severe dehydrating diarrhoea (commonly known as 'stomach flu') in infants and young children.

Human milk oligosaccharides, milk microbiome and infant gut microbiome modulate neonatal rotavirus infection

Neonatal rotavirus infections are associated with gastrointestinal symptoms in some settings, but the role of host factors in clinical presentation is unclear. Here, Ramani et al. show that human milk oligosaccharides and microbiome are associated with symptomatic infection with neonatal strain G10P[11].

Glycan recognition in globally dominant human rotaviruses

Human rotaviruses (RV) bind to histo-blood group antigens (HBGA) for attachment, but how different viral genotypes interact with HBGA isn’t known. Here, Hu et al. report crystal structures of a prevalent and a neonate-specific RV in complex with HBGA and provide insights into glycan recognition and age-restricted tropism of RVs.
