Ligases are enzymes that catalyze the formation of chemical bonds, for instance C–O, C–N, C–S bonds, between two macromolecules, such as proteins or peptides, usually with accompanying hydrolysis of a pyrophosphate bond from adenosine triphosphate (ATP) or another high-energy donor.
