An archaeal gene is a DNA sequence corresponding to protein-coding sequence or functional RNA, either from a cultured archaeon or inferred by phylogenetic clustering to originate in an archaeon. Due to similarity in operon organization and gene expression between archaea and bacteria, the definition of a novel genome sequence as archaean requires multiple sequence comparisons.
