Aims & Scope

npj Precision Oncology considers research covering all aspects of basic science, translational, and clinical research in the field of precision oncology. The journal broadly defines precision oncology as cancer diagnosis, prognosis, prevention, and treatment tailored specifically to the individual patient based on the genetic and/or molecular profile of the patient. We welcome innovative, well-conducted, and deep studies.

The journal covers a broad range of topics including but not limited to:

  • Targeted therapy and precision medicine clinical trials and therapeutic strategies
  • Biomarker studies that include both biological and external validation using an independent cohort
  • Immunotherapies, immune checkpoint inhibitors, adoptive cell therapies, cancer vaccines, and immunomodulatory agents for personalized cancer treatment
  • Applications of liquid biopsy techniques, including circulating tumor DNA, circulating tumor cells, and exosomes, for non-invasive cancer detection, monitoring, and treatment response assessment
  • Tumor heterogeneity, clonal evolution, and tumor microenvironment dynamics in cancer progression, metastasis, and therapy resistance
  • Genomic profiling and molecular characterization of cancer
  • Drug resistance mechanisms and therapeutic strategies
  • Clinical applications of predictive modeling, artificial intelligence, and computational oncology, including studies on large language models for research applications or clinical applications in oncology; and studies on deep learning-based data analysis in oncology with external validation and clear clinical potential
  • Pharmacogenomics and drug metabolism, including secondary analyses of clinical trial datasets
  • Microbiome studies only with clear evidence of relevance to a precision oncology treatment

The journal offers more choice to Nature Portfolio authors who are seeking a fully open-access and more inclusive platform for publishing their work. The journal is led by oncology experts who collaborate to cultivate high-quality research. As part of the npj Series, this journal focuses on fostering global partnerships with the research community and other Springer Nature journals.
