Clock-gene variants linked to diabetes
Receptor for body-clock hormone connected to disease risk.
Fresh evidence suggests that melatonin, a hormone that regulates the body's biological clock, is associated with type 2 diabetes.
Epidemiological studies have shown that shift workers have an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

I wonder if melatonin has anything to do with increase in stress hormones related to sleep deprivation which may be counter regulatory to insulin release or action. Were these taken into consideration by the researches?
