Why did the chipmunk not cross the road?
Study hints that it's open spaces, not traffic, that put small mammals off.
Small mammals have a habit of avoiding paved roads and being hesitant to cross them. But ecologists have not been able to agree whether the problem lies with the road itself or with the cars roaring by.
