Abstract
Amino acids not only participate as substrates in metabolic pathways but can also act as regulators of signal transduction pathways. The protein kinase mTOR is involved in the control of cell growth and size, and overactivation of mTOR signalling has been linked to cancer, ageing and type 2 diabetes.
