Structural biology: ESCRT service
Steven L. Alam1 & Wesley I. Sundquist1
Abstract
The sorting and degradation of cell-surface proteins are essential for cellular homeostasis. The ESCRT-I complex is known to be involved in these events, and new structural findings elucidate its core architecture.
The compartmentalization of cells in higher organisms has brought about the need for reliable trafficking systems to transport cargoes in and out of different membrane-enclosed organelles. The endosomal sorting complex required for transport-I (ESCRT-I), which is evolutionarily conserved from yeast to humans, is one component of the intracellular trafficking machinery.
