Developmental biology: Cell fate in the mammary gland
Qiang Tong1 & Gökhan S. Hotamisligil2
Abstract
Most breast cancers have their origin in the luminal epithelial cells of the mammary gland. Defining how a master regulator controls the development of this cell lineage could provide important hints about why this should be.
The developmental biology of the mammary gland is a fascinating process — from its origins in the embryo to the many dynamic changes in later stages of life. But it is thought to be perverted in breast cancer.
