Imaging techniques:  Seeing single spins

P. Chris Hammel1

Top

Combining the imaging power of magnetic resonance and the sensitivity of atomic force microscopy has created a hybrid technique that can resolve single spins beneath the surface of a sample.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) are two of the most powerful imaging technologies available. MRI can provide, non-invasively, fully three-dimensional images from deep within an object.
