Guide to Supplementary Information Files

Instrumental directory This directory contains: 1. Instrumental surface temperature eigenvectors (EOFs and PC series), their corresponding eigenvalues, and the gridbox centers for the 1082 instrumental surface temperature gridpoint series used; 2. Gridpoint temperature standardization factors used to normalize the 1082 instrumental gridpoint series; 3. The original Climatic Research Unit (CRU) gridpoint surface temperature temperature database from 1854-1993 of Jones and Briffa [1992] used by MBH98 (this version of the dataset has been replaced by a different surface temperature dataset at CRU and is no longer available). A simple fortran program that reads in the data is provided.
Proxy directory This directory contains:1. The 11 distinct matrices of proxy data corresponding to the 11 distinct intervals of the stepwise reconstruction described by MBH98; 2. The 11 corresponding files listing the corresponding set of proxy indicators, and the weights applied to those proxy indicators in the analysis; 3. Data matrix containing all 415 individual proxy (and instrumental/historical) series contributing to the proxy indicators networks used by MBH98; 4. Updated list of all individual series used by MBH98, with start/end dates of series, and references.
Figure Data This directory contains the ime series data shown in MBH98, corresponding to Figures 5a; 5b; 7.
Methods A supplement to the brief description of methods provided in MBH98, providing some additional minor methodological details.
