Astronomy: Worlds of mutual motion
Jean-Luc Margot
Abstract
Two asteroids beyond Neptune have been found to orbit one another. This binary system in the Kuiper belt shows marked differences from binary objects elsewhere in the Solar System.
The existence of asteroids between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter has been known for about 200 years. These small, irregular bodies are the remnants of planetary embryos that have been broken up by collisions to provide convenient samples of various stages in the planet-building process.
