Abstract
ATMOSPHERIC trace concentrations of carbon tetrafluoride (CF4) in a variety of ambient air samples have been measured. The air samples were concentrated by a cryogenic trapping technique and the CF4 species identified by combined gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) with single ion monitoring. The contribution of natural and/or anthropogenic sources to the global burden of CF4 is unknown. CF4 may be one of the atmosphere's rare gases.
