Abstract
The existence of tropospheric sinks for CFCs 11 and 12 would have a large impact on projected stratospheric ozone effects. The existence of such sinks, distinct from no sinks, cannot at present be discerned from atmospheric measurements. As presently analysed, tens of years may pass before such a distinction would be possible. This article scrutinises transient mechanisms that could contribute to accomplishing this critical distinction in 10 yr or less.
