DNA Synthesis and Hormone-induced Elongation in the Cucumber Hypocotyl

Abstract

IT has been reported1 that inhibition of DNA synthesis also inhibited shoot elongation induced by the hormone gibberellin (GA). GA treatment, which induced elongation, was shown to enhance DNA synthesis without any apparent increase in number of cells2. On the other hand, elongation induced by indoloacetic acid (IAA) did not seem to depend on DNA synthesis3. Katsumi et al.4 have shown that both gibberellin and auxin induce elongation in the cucumber hypocotyl. We therefore chose this system to compare the effects of the two hormones on DNA synthesis as associated with hypocotyl elongation.
