Abstract
THE shape and shift of spectral lines can be used to determine the temperature and the particle density in either laboratory or astrophysical plasmas. The contribution to the breadth of a line from radiation damping can be neglected in all practical cases in comparison with the effects of (a) the thermal motions of the emitting atomic systems and (b) the perturbation of the emitters by neighbouring particles. The theory of the Doppler effect (a) is well known and can be considered to be independent of the pressure effect (b) with which we are concerned here.
