Abstract
THERE are quite a number of African mouth-breeding cichlids (Haplochromis and related genera) the males of which bear very conspicuously yellow or orange spots near the base of the anal fin. The function of these so-called ‘anal ocelli’ has now been elucidated in Haplochromis wingatii.
