Conserved Terminal Sequence in 18S rRNA May Represent Terminator Anticodons

Abstract

WE report here that the 3′-terminal octanucleotide sequences of 18S rRNA from yeast, Drosophila and rabbit reticulocytes are identical. The 3′-terminal hexanucleotide is complementary to known eukaryotic terminator codons suggesting a role for the 3′-end of the small rRNA in the termination of protein synthesis.
