Electrodes containing hollow carbon nanospheres are promising for realizing batteries that can both store a lot of energy and be charged rapidly.

Lithium-ion batteries are used to power everything from mobile devices to electric vehicles. But while they can store a lot of energy in a small space, they are relatively slow to charge.

Now, a team led by researchers from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) in South Korea has shown that batteries with electrodes containing conductive hollow carbon nanospheres have both a high energy density and are fast charging.

The researchers say that their hybrid lithium-ion battery has an energy density close to that of conventional lithium-ion batteries and that it only takes a minute to recharge it. They consider conductive hollow nanospheres as promising for future energy-storage technologies.
