A new flexible electrode could boost the performance and durability of flexible fuel cells.

The quest for smaller, more portable, and more flexible electronic devices continues. Durable bendy batteries, however, are tricky to build as crucial components inevitably become detached after repeated flexing. A team from the East China University of Science and Technology built a flexible electrode by coating positively charged carbon fibre cloth with a few layers of molybdenum disulfide nanosheets enriched with carbon. This resulted in a strongly bonded structure with large pores that could absorb the previously problematic expansion caused by the charge and discharge process. When tested in a flexible lithium ion fuel cell, the new electrode remained highly conductive over 100 charge and discharge cycles and repeated bending.

The stability and flexibility of this new material make it an attractive option for the next wave of wearable electronics.
