ADVANCE DENTAL CENTRE, CHELMSFORD - An insertion of a skillfully designed dental surgery into an impossibly constrained site, the layout of the Advance Dental Centre is intrinsically ergonomically efficient and provides for the highest standards of cross-infection control. Patient circulation is separated from that of staff, which helps to calm patients, as well improving hygiene standards. The less there is in the surgery, the less there is to keep clean: a storage wall accessed from both sides houses all services, instruments and materials. Lying in a dentist's chair looking at the blue sky and clouds through a carefully placed rooflight must soothe even the most frazzled nerves. 'ON THE BEACH...': DENTAL CLINIC KU64, BERLIN, GERMANY The general concept for the dental clinic of Dr Ziegler is radically new. The model of a dune landscape with high points and hollows to hide in, such as is found on a beach, was used as a metaphor for an artificial landscape of undulating folded floors reflected by a ceiling of a similar shape. This creates a space that provides a feeling of introverted protection without distinct enclosure. 'Hills' and 'valleys' are configured in order to allow privacy and intimacy as well as openness and wide views. Anamorphotic images in white are silk-screened onto the general orange surface and can only be deciphered from distinct viewpoints. While moving through the space, it continuously changes. Furniture also functions as storage and technical equipment and has become invisible, integrated into the sculpture of the space. BARBICAN ORTHODONTICS - Designers King and Co. have more than 15 years experience in dental and orthodontic refurbishments. They were approached to create a contemporary design for this Central London practice. David King described the premises, which provide NHS and private care and are set out over three floors, as 'challenging'. The basement needed to incorporate three chairs and, due to space and light restrictions, the designers utilised semi-opaque profiled glass screens for separation and introduced a light well to provide natural light. DENTAL LOUNGE, DUSSELDORF, GERMANY - The architects' intention to break with stereotypes and common patterns of perception are of special interest, especially when designing a dental practice, which is often tainted with negative preconceptions. Warm, comforting colours of brown, orange and red, the lounge atmosphere and the successful space sculpture are all important elements within the effect of the practice, signifying the patients' well-being. The main source of inspiration is the Aesculapius Staff, the snake winding around the staff - a symbol of the medical profession. Practice and design revolve around the patient, with the 'twister', a sculpture winding from the wall and stretching over the ceiling, practically drawing the patient towards the reception desk. THE COSMETIC DENTAL CLINIC, NEWCASTLE - This five floor listed Georgian townhouse was ideally placed to house a dental practice, but required significant restoration to transform it into the ultra-chic boutique clinic that it is today. With English Heritage approval the building was returned to its 1830s splendour with cornicing, high skirting, cast iron fireplaces and the original sweeping staircase set against a backdrop of ornate chandeliers, oversized gilt mirrors, natural travertine tiles, Italian leather and the latest dental technology.
