According to research, the prevalence of gingival recession can be attributed to tooth brushing – or more accurately, incorrect technique or mechanical trauma.

Over brushing and the use of hard toothbrush bristles are common factors too. There is also evidence that suggests increasing brushing frequency with a hard toothbrush can increase the amount of surface area affected by gingival recession. As such, it is crucial that patients are encouraged to use toothbrushes with soft heads – research shows that both powered and manual tools are effective at minimising and reducing recession when used twice-daily long-term.

All toothbrushes from Curaprox use CUREN filaments instead of nylon to prevent damage to patients' gingiva. The gentle filaments are also all extremely fine, which allows more bristles to be densely packed into the brush head for a more efficient clean.

The CS 5460 ultra-soft toothbrush, for instance, has 5,460 bristles. In comparison, a standard toothbrush typically has around 500–800.
