The CarieScan Pro measures the presence of tooth decay early and accurately and is 92.5% accurate in detecting both sound and carious teeth. It can also detect hidden decay, providing dental practitioners with the opportunity to arrest or even reverse decay, driving the trend towards preventative dental care.

The lightweight handheld device allows easy monitoring of the effect of treatment regimes to show decay advancement or regression, thus enabling dentists to tailor treatment to the needs of the patient at a low cost.

The Pro consists of a handpiece and a disposable sensor which is held against the tooth being examined in a process which takes approximately four seconds per tooth with the result displayed on the handpiece. It enables dentists to evaluate teeth using AC impedance spectroscopy by providing information about whether the tissue is healthy or not at different stages in the decay cycle. It measures the demineralisation of enamel, while other methods measure the effect or result of demineralisation.

The device is currently configured to assess the occlusal surfaces and the free-smooth surfaces of teeth. There is no pain, no sensation and no ionising radiation – simply the touch of the sensor on a patient's tooth. Readings are clear and easily understood by patients, making explanation of the need for treatment easy.

Cost per test is lower than comparative X-rays and the single patient disposable eliminates potential cross infection issues. A replacement sensor is used for each patient, with built-in system tests for automatic calibration and accuracy.
