Sirona's PerioScan scaling system detects and gently removes subgingival deposits – and hence minimises the risk of over-cautious or over-aggressive therapy. A brand new, all-in-one ultrasonic system for the detection and removal of dental calculus, it detects deposits in places which dentists normally cannot view clearly – eg in the gum pockets.

Special sensors in the handpiece can distinguish between calculus and healthy root surfaces. On the tip the system emits vibrations and analyses the specific oscillation pattern of the tooth surface.

The results of this analysis are displayed via a ring-shaped LED on the hand-piece. Green tells the user that the root surface is in a healthy condition and blue indicates the presence of calculus. If the LED is not lit, the tip is not in contact with the root. In addition, the control unit can be set in such a way that it emits an acoustic signal whenever calculus is encountered.

There is also an optional acoustic signal that indicates when the scaler tip is not in contact with the tooth. The dentist can switch from the diagnosis mode to the therapy mode by depressing the footswitch.
