Graham was a general dental practitioner through and through, with a passion for continuing education. After graduating from Guy's, he worked as an associate in Croydon from 1973, before owning and running a multi-surgery practice in Hollinwood, Oldham, from 1976-1985, and then in Cheadle.

He became involved in local dental politics early in his career as an active member and subsequently chairman of the Oldham LDC, then a member of the Stockport LDC continuously since 1988. Joining the BDA in 1972, he served as secretary, treasurer and ultimately chairman of his section of the East Lancashire and East Cheshire branch; being elected in 1986 to the representative board. Graham's interest in dental education developed such that he became a high profile figure in vocational training as an adviser in the Mersey deanery for 11 years; furthering his skills by achieving a postgraduate certificate in education and a master's degree in clinical education. He was elected chair of the BDA's education and standards committee, notably revitalising the careers day. He also served on the BDA's executive board and general dental practice committee. He was actively involved with the Manchester Dental Education Centre, and served on committees concerned with continuing education, including working parties for the Department of Health and General Dental Council. He became a fellow of the BDA in 2011.

Graham was elected to the BDA's new UK council, following the major reorganisation of the association's governance in 2012. He was chair of the UK council's scrutiny committee for five years, the constitutional link between the representative and governance sides of the organisation. Graham undertook this role with considerable skill and tact, contributing greatly to the stability and quality of the association's new governance.

His other passion in life was his love of music. He was an accomplished performer on both the piano and the organ which, combined with his deep faith, led him to play the organ in St Michael's Church in Bramhall, Stockport for many years, only ceasing a couple of years ago. He devoted many hours to being the musical director and conductor of several choirs at different times and was musical director for many shows, both amateur and professional. He was also a talented accompanist.

Graham was a caring and kind man. He always ensured, for example, that BDA staff who supported him in his work for the association were acknowledged and this was much appreciated.

I know Graham's life is celebrated by Glynis and the whole family; he was loved as a husband, father and grandfather. They can be assured that Graham has attained an honoured place in the history of the profession he served with such devotion.
