A student guide to tooth surface loss

Traditionally considered a natural consequence of an ageing dentition, non-carious tooth surface loss (TSL) is becoming increasingly prevalent amongst the younger population. Notably, the increased incidence is more likely to be attributed to pathological causes. These would include an increased accessibility and uptake of erosive products, social pressures and a generalised change in lifestyle. Often, patients are unaware of the problem themselves, and may not actively seek professional advice until they encounter symptoms or cosmetic concerns. Suspected tooth surface loss must be investigated, diagnosed and discussed with patients, in order to determine the most appropriate response.
