Family reflections: NEC families are partners in research

I decided to share my family’s story and become part of the NEC Society to help advance research to build a world without necrotizing enterocolitis. In partnership with the NEC Society team, my unique perspective is helping to spur new ways of serving NICU families. By bringing together families like mine, with dedicated clinicians and researchers, our NEC Society team is working tirelessly to ensure NICU families understand the risk and protective factors associated with NEC and receive adequate support, information, and resources.

In collaboration with the NEC Society and other organizations that integrate the patient-family perspective, I have had the opportunity to transform our family’s trauma and pain into something meaningful. It is empowering and comforting to know our family’s experience is helping to drive research to prevent other families from experiencing the devastation of NEC. It is inspiring to collaborate with clinicians and researchers who authentically care and recognize the urgency of this work. I am filled with a sense of hope and purpose as I contribute to the multidisciplinary team working to build a world without NEC.
