In this session the presenters, both experienced clinicians and health care ethicist, will explore the major ethical challenges pediatric hematology and immunology pose to clinicians and ethicist. These include 1) how best to establish pediatric hematology and immunology as one priority among many for scarce health care resources, 2) identifying the appropriate decision making model to guide clinical decisions [three models will be presented and critiqued], 3) developing a moral reasoning framework to determine the "right and good" healing action when there is a conflict about therapeutic interventions, and 4) preventing and resolving ethical conflict. Criteria for ethical competence will be presented and the case made for ethical competence as a core competence for professional healers.
